Alaska Cruise 2027: What’s New and When to Book

The quick answer
The Alaska cruise 2027 season runs from late April through September, and the big lines I checked have all been on sale since mid-2025. What's actually new: Holland America's first 8-day Vancouver Inside Passage cruise, Princess's biggest Alaska season yet (8 ships, 187 departures, 85 Glacier Bay calls), Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas sailing Alaska for the first time, and MSC Poesia's second Seattle season with a new Yacht Club. Juneau's daily passenger caps (16,000, or 12,000 on Saturdays) debuted in 2026 and get reviewed every year. For July and August balconies, family cabins and Denali cruisetours, I'd book by early 2027. May and September give you more time.
Here's the odd thing about planning an Alaska cruise 2027 in October 2026: the books are already open. Carnival announced its 2027 schedule in July 2025. Holland America had more than 100 cruises bookable that August, and Princess opened its season on August 12.
So “what's new” isn't a rumor mill anymore. It's a real list of ships, itineraries and rule changes, and some of it affects which cabin you should grab first.
I pulled the details from cruise line announcements and official sources. Below you'll find the line-by-line changes, what Juneau's caps and Glacier Bay's limits mean for your port days, a sample of what fares look like, and a booking timeline.
What's new for an Alaska cruise 2027, line by line
Most of the 2027 changes are about routes and ship placement, not shiny new hulls. Among the five lines below, I didn't find a ship built new for Alaska, and I'd rather tell you that than hype something.
| Cruise line | Ships and ports | What stands out for 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Princess | Eight ships from Seattle, Vancouver, Whittier, San Francisco and Los Angeles | 187 departures on 17 itineraries, 85 Glacier Bay calls, Star Princess back on weekly Seattle sailings |
| Holland America | Six ships from Seattle, Vancouver and Whittier | New 8-day Vancouver Inside Passage cruise, 80th Alaska anniversary, 72 new Denali Lodge rooms |
| Carnival | Spirit and Legend from Seattle, Luminosa from San Francisco | 50+ Alaska itineraries, Luminosa's 10-day cruises start May 3 |
| Royal Caribbean | Anthem, Quantum, Voyager and Serenade from Seattle, Seward and Vancouver | Anthem's first Alaska season, including its first Alaska cruisetours; mostly 7-night cruises |
| MSC | Poesia from Seattle | 7-night cruises every Monday from April 26, with a new Yacht Club and two new specialty restaurants after her refit |
Norwegian, Celebrity and other lines sail Alaska too. I haven't confirmed their 2027 schedules for this post, so check their own sites before you compare.
A few of those rows deserve a closer look. Star Princess is a Sphere Class ship and the first of her kind to sail in Alaska. In 2027 she does 7-day Seattle roundtrips every Sunday. If you're driving up from Oregon, a Seattle departure is the simplest way in, and my Alaska cruise from Seattle guide covers the routes and ships.
Carnival's Luminosa is the one for Californians. She sails 10-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco starting May 3, which saves you a flight north.
The new and different itineraries worth knowing
Holland America's new 8-day Inside Passage cruise
This one is genuinely new. It sails roundtrip from Vancouver, visits Glacier Bay, and calls at Skagway, Ketchikan and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. It also has a late-night departure from Juneau, which means extra evening time ashore.
That extra day is a nice middle ground if seven nights feels short and two weeks feels like a lot. Holland America also brings back its 28-day Arctic Circle Solstice cruise from Seattle on Noordam, departing June 6. A 7-day Great Bear Rainforest roundtrip from Seattle, also on Noordam, is on the schedule for wildlife fans.
Denali and cruisetours
Holland America is wrapping up renovations at its Denali Lodge in 2027. Two new guest buildings replace older ones and add 72 rooms. Princess offers stays at five wilderness lodges, and Royal Caribbean's Anthem adds its first Alaska cruisetours, with Denali and glass-dome rail options.
Land packages are limited by lodge rooms and rail seats, so they tend to be the tightest part of any Alaska trip. If Denali is a must, I'd book the cruisetour first and treat the cruise as the add-on.
Small ships
If big ships sound like too many people, small ships carry far fewer passengers and cost noticeably more. I wrote up that style of trip in my Inside Passage small boat cruise guide.
Juneau's caps and Glacier Bay's limits: what they mean for you
Two rules shape your port days more than any new ship does. Both are easy to miss in the brochure.
Juneau's daily passenger cap
2026 was the first year Juneau capped cruise passengers at 16,000 a day, with a lower 12,000 limit on Saturdays. In earlier seasons the busiest days could hit about 21,000 visitors. A five-ship-per-day limit has been in place since 2024.
Here's the catch. The caps are voluntary, nonbinding agreements between the city and the cruise industry, and the two sides meet every year to review them. They also don't mean fewer people overall, because cruise lines mostly tweaked schedules to stay under the line. Your port order may not match an older blog post, so check the current rules close to sailing. KTOO's report on the first capped season has the background.
One more thing locals pointed out in 2026: the rest of the region is filling up. Ketchikan came in almost as busy as Juneau, so don't assume the other ports are empty just because Juneau has a cap.
Melinda's tip
Book the popular Juneau excursions (Mendenhall Glacier, whale watching) as soon as your sailing opens up to them. A cap on passengers doesn't create more seats on a whale boat. I like to browse Viator's Alaska shore excursions and read the cancellation terms before I pay, so I can still change my mind.
Glacier Bay is rationed
Glacier Bay National Park limits how many cruise ships can enter, and only some sailings get a slot. Princess plans 85 Glacier Bay calls in 2027, which it says is the most of any line. Every Voyage of the Glaciers and every 14-day Grand Adventure includes the park. Holland America's new 8-day cruise lists it too. You can read the official vessel rules in the federal regulations for Glacier Bay.
If Glacier Bay is your priority, confirm it's on your exact sailing date, not just the itinerary name. Otherwise you may end up at Tracy Arm, Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, or Hubbard Glacier. Those are lovely in their own right, but they aren't the same thing.

When should you book an Alaska cruise for 2027?
Short version: it depends on what you're chasing. Everything is already open, so the real question is how much choice you're willing to give up by waiting.
This is my rule of thumb, not a guarantee. It's October 2026, so the first row is basically “now.”
| If you want… | Book by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Denali cruisetour | Now to winter | Lodge rooms and rail seats are limited |
| July or August balcony | Early 2027 | Best cabins go first, prices tend to climb |
| Family rooms or connecting cabins | Early 2027 | Few of them per ship |
| Suite or a specific cabin location | As soon as you're ready | One-off inventory |
| May or September sailing | Spring 2027 is workable | More inventory, softer fares |
| Flexible, cheapest fare | Watch and wait | You might catch a promo, but you risk losing the cabin |
For help with timing and promos, my Alaska cruise deals guide and the month-by-month best time to cruise to Alaska post go deeper. Month matters as much as line when you pick dates.
Watch out
This one catches people every time. You book a “cheap” Seattle sailing, then spend the savings on a last-minute hotel and a pricey airport run. If you're flying in, add a pre-cruise night so a late flight can't wreck embarkation day. I'd check Seattle hotels near the cruise terminals early, since sailing days can fill rooms.
How much will Alaska cruises 2027 cost?
I can't give you one honest number, because fares move daily and depend on the ship, the week and the cabin. As a snapshot, listings for MSC Poesia's 7-night Seattle sailings showed per-person fares from the high $500s in early May to around $900 by August. Treat that as a sample, not a quote.
The pattern holds across most lines. May and September are usually cheaper, July and August cost more, and balconies are a big jump from interiors. Small ships cost more again. My Alaskan cruise cost guide breaks down what else lands on the bill.
The fare is never the whole bill. Drinks, tips, excursions, flights and parking add up fast. Lines also price very differently for what's included, which is why I compare them in my best Alaskan cruise line guide.
Melinda's tip
When you compare lines, price the same cabin category in the same week, then add up what's included. A fare that looks $200 higher can come with drinks, Wi-Fi or shore credit you would have bought anyway. That's where the real difference hides.
Who should wait, switch lines or skip a sailing
I'd be doing you a disservice if I only told you what's shiny. A few situations deserve a straight answer.
- Glacier Bay or bust? Pick a sailing that actually lists it for your date. Don't book a line that doesn't go there and hope.
- Hate crowds? Look at May or September. A Saturday call in Juneau also falls under the lower 12,000 cap, though that's a ceiling, not a promise. A port with five ships still feels like a port with five ships.
- Traveling with kids? Compare programs, cabin layouts and port stops, not just price. My best family cruise to Alaska guide covers that.
- Want a wild, quiet trip? Big ships may frustrate you, and small ships cost more. Decide that first.
- Need total price certainty? Don't wait for a miracle sale. Book what you want, then ask me to check if a better offer appears.
One packing item I'd actually buy: a pair of compact binoculars. Look for waterproof, fog-resistant ones that are light enough to carry all day. For the rest of your bag, my Alaska cruise packing list by month is the place to start.
Your questions, answered
Are Alaska cruises for 2027 open for booking yet?
Yes. Carnival announced its 2027 Alaska schedule in July 2025, Holland America had more than 100 cruises bookable in early August 2025, and Princess opened its season on August 12, 2025. MSC opened sales on October 8, 2025, and Royal Caribbean opened to its Crown & Anchor Society members ahead of an October 23, 2025 public launch. Sailings, cabins and fares are all live now.
Is it too late to book an Alaska cruise for 2027?
No, but the clock matters for peak dates. July and August balconies, connecting family rooms and Denali cruisetours tend to go first, so I'd book those by early 2027 (that's my rule of thumb, not a guarantee). May and September sailings usually leave you more time and more cabin choices.
Which cruise lines go to Glacier Bay in 2027?
Princess and Holland America both list Glacier Bay National Park on 2027 itineraries. Princess plans 85 calls, and Holland America's new 8-day Vancouver cruise includes it. Federal rules limit how many cruise ships can enter the park, so confirm Glacier Bay is on your exact sailing date. On sailings without it, lines often swap in glacier scenery like Tracy Arm, Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, or Hubbard Glacier.
Are there any brand-new ships sailing Alaska in 2027?
In the five lines I checked, I didn't find a ship built new for Alaska. What's new is mostly placement and itineraries: Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas sails Alaska for the first time, Star Princess returns as the first Sphere Class ship in the region, MSC Poesia comes back after a major refit, and Holland America adds a new 8-day cruise.
What is the cheapest month for an Alaska cruise in 2027?
May and September usually carry the lowest fares, and May tends to be cooler and quieter. July and August are the peak for demand and prices. Fares change daily, so treat any month-by-month number as a snapshot, not a promise.
Do Alaska cruise prices drop closer to sailing?
Sometimes, mostly on shoulder-season dates where cabins are still empty. Peak July and August balconies rarely get cheaper, and the cabin you want can simply disappear. If you want a specific cabin, waiting is a gamble.
My honest take before you book
If I had to boil down alaska cruises 2027 into one piece of advice, it's this: pick your month and your must-see first, then pick the line. Glacier Bay, Denali, a calm shoulder season and a family-friendly ship all point to different answers.
If you're on the West Coast like me, you've got an advantage. Seattle and Vancouver are easy to reach, and the 2027 lineup gives you plenty to choose from. My Alaska cruises page is a good place to start. Or send me your dates and I'll do the comparing.
