The one cruise where a sea day is the main event
Transit day starts before sunrise and lasts most of the day. Your ship gets lifted through the Gatún locks up to a rainforest lake, then lowered back down to the sea. It moves slowly, with very little room on each side. Lots of people crowd the decks to watch, so I help families find a calmer spot.
The big choice is full transit or partial. A full transit goes ocean to ocean between Florida and California, so you fly one way at each end. A partial goes in through the locks, turns around in the lake and comes back out, so you fly round trip to one city. Neither is wrong. They are just different trips.

Which canal cruise fits your family?
Full transit
Ocean to ocean, usually 14 to 15 nights, between Florida and California in either direction. You pass through every set of locks. Plan for a one-way flight at each end.
Partial transit
Round trip from Florida, 10 to 11 nights. In through the Gatún locks, then a turn in the lake and back out again, with Caribbean ports on either side. The flights are simpler, too.
Repositioning sailings
Spring and fall, when ships move between the Caribbean and the West Coast or Alaska. A good fit if your calendar has some give in it.
