The Mexican Riviera: A West Coast Family Classic
There is something deeply satisfying about boarding a cruise ship in San Francisco — one of the most beautiful cities in the world — and waking up three days later to palm trees, turquoise water, and the smell of street tacos. Mexican Riviera cruises have been a West Coast family staple for decades, and for good reason: the itineraries are relaxed, the ports are genuinely fun, and the price point is often more accessible than Alaska.
The prime season runs from November through April, which makes this the ideal winter escape or spring break trip for families. Most itineraries run 10 to 15 nights and call at a combination of Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, and sometimes Ensenada on the return.
The Ports
Cabo San Lucas — dramatic rock formations, clear water, and a lively waterfront. The famous El Arco arch is best seen from the water on a glass-bottom boat tour.
Puerto Vallarta — the most well-rounded port on the itinerary. The old town is walkable, the beaches are excellent, and there are family-friendly excursions ranging from zip-lining in the jungle to whale watching in the bay (December through March).
Mazatlán — the underrated gem of the Mexican Riviera. The historic Centro district has been beautifully restored, the seafood is exceptional, and it feels far less touristy than Cabo or PV.

Planning Your Mexican Riviera Cruise
Mexico cruises along the Mexican Riviera are a favorite for first-time cruisers, and for good reason. Most sailings depart round-trip from Los Angeles, Long Beach, or San Diego and visit a lively mix of ports — Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlán are the classics, with some longer itineraries adding Ensenada or continuing farther down the coast. The sweet spot for warm, dry weather and good value runs from late fall through early spring, when the Pacific coast is at its best but you sidestep the peak-holiday price spikes. Many lines also offer shorter three- to five-night getaways if you want a taste of cruising before committing to a full week.
If it’s your first cruise, a little planning goes a long way. An interior cabin keeps the fare down, while a balcony is a real treat on sea days; either way, booking early gives you the best choice of location and price. Dining, drink packages, and gratuities can add up, so it helps to understand what’s included before you sail. In port, the right shore excursions make the trip — snorkeling in Cabo, a food-and-tequila tour in Puerto Vallarta, or simply a relaxed beach day — but it’s just as important to skip the ones that won’t suit your group.
