Cruise FAQ: Yes, Your Family Can Cruise

Worried about all the unknowns, like the noise or the first day on board? I get it. I’m a mom of three boys with their own special needs and sensory needs. Here are my honest answers.

Don’t see your question? Just ask me and I’ll help you figure it out.

Before You Book

Does it cost more to book through you?
Not a penny more. My help is free to you. The cruise line pays me, not you. You just get a mom who gets it in your corner.
When should I book my cruise?
For the best cabins and prices, 6 to 18 months ahead is ideal. That matters most for Alaska (book in winter or spring) and holiday sailings. Booking early also gives you more choice of quieter cabins. Many of the year’s best deals come during โ€œWave Seasonโ€ (January to March). I’ll help you time it right.
Which cruise line or ship is right for me?
That’s exactly what I’m here for. The โ€œbestโ€ line depends on your budget and what your family needs to feel calm. Tell me a little about your trip and I’ll match you to the right ship.

Money, Tipping & Whatโ€™s Included

Whatโ€™s included in my cruise fare?
Your fare typically covers your cabin, most meals, entertainment, pools, and onboard activities. Usually not included: gratuities, alcohol, specialty dining, shore excursions, spa, and wi-fi. Iโ€™ll walk you through it so there are no surprises.
Are gratuities included?
Most lines add daily gratuities (about $16 to $25 per person, per day) to your onboard account, though some fares include them. I’ll tell you exactly what to expect for your sailing.
Do I need a drink package?
It depends on how much you’ll drink. They can be great value for some and a waste for others. I’ll help you run the math for your trip.

Onboard Life

Is there wi-fi on the ship?
Yes. Nearly every ship offers wi-fi packages, and new satellite internet makes it faster than ever. I’ll point you to the best plan for staying connected (or unplugging!).
Will I get seasick?
Most people are perfectly fine. Modern ships have stabilizers and are remarkably smooth. If you’re worried, a midship, lower-deck cabin helps, and simple remedies work well. I can pick a cabin location that minimizes motion.
What is there to do onboard?
A lot! Pools, shows, kids and teen clubs, and activities from morning to night. If your child needs a break from the noise, I can help you find quieter spots on your ship before you sail.

Packing & Documents

Do I need a passport?
For most round-trip cruises from a U.S. port, you can technically sail with a birth certificate and government ID. But I strongly recommend a passport. It’s required for some itineraries and essential if you ever need to fly home from a foreign port.
What should I pack?
Casual daytime clothes, a few nicer outfits for dinner, swimwear, sunscreen, any medications, and chargers. Once you book, I send you a full packing list tailored to your cruise.

Families & Groups

Are cruises good for families and teens?
Yes! Matching families to the right ship is what I love most. That includes families with special needs and sensory needs. I can help with a quieter cabin and the cruise line’s special needs forms, so everyone (including you!) gets a real vacation.
Can you book group or celebration cruises?
Absolutely. Family reunions, milestone birthdays, girlfriend getaways and group trips. I love putting these together, and there are great perks for booking as a group.

Booking With Me

How do we get started?
Two easy ways: book a free planning call, or send me a message with a few details. From there, I handle the searching and the booking, and I’m here for you until you’re home.

For families with special needs and sensory needs

Here are some of the small things I plan for:

  • A quieter cabin away from the elevators and the pool deck
  • A plan for the ship horn and other loud moments
  • A picture story so your child knows what’s next
  • A quiet spot for when it all feels like too much
  • Help with the cruise line’s special needs forms
