The best family cruise on the West Coast
I didn’t expect Alaska to be what it was. What I got was a humpback whale breaching thirty feet from our ship, a glacier the size of a city block calving into the sea, and my teenager — completely speechless.
Alaska cruises run May through September, with the sweet spot late June through August when wildlife peaks and the weather cooperates. Most sail 7 nights, round-trip from Seattle or one-way through the Inside Passage from Vancouver.

Easiest for most US families — no passport required for citizens on closed-loop sailings (though I always recommend having one). Well-connected to Sea-Tac and simple to navigate.
Vancouver BC departures
Requires a passport to cross into Canada, but the city is worth arriving a day early — Stanley Park, the waterfront, and one of the best food scenes on the coast.
California departures
Several Alaska sailings leave round-trip from San Francisco too — usually 10 nights, with no flying required for Bay Area families. A relaxed way to go if you would rather set off closer to home.
