Hawaii is warm in every month, so the best time to cruise depends on what you want most.

The quick answer

The best time to cruise Hawaii depends on which ship you pick. Norwegian's Pride of America sails from Honolulu all year, and late April to early June is my pick for dry weather before the peak storm months. The long round trips from California only run from about mid-September to mid-April, and January through March is the sweet spot there if you want whales. Weeks away from holidays and school breaks usually cost less.

Hawaii is warm every month, so “when should I go?” is really four questions in a trench coat. When is it driest? When are the whales here? When is storm risk lowest? When is it cheapest?

The answers don't line up. Whale season is the wetter half of the year. The driest, hottest months overlap with hurricane season. And the ship you choose can shrink your calendar before weather even comes up.

Below you'll find a month-by-month table, plain talk about rain and storms, and a few ways to pay less. I'll also tell you who should skip this trip.

What is the best time to cruise Hawaii?

There isn't one winner. There's a best month for each thing you might care about. Here's how I sort it when someone asks me about the best time to cruise Hawaii.

Your priority Aim for Why
Whales January to March NOAA's usual peak for humpbacks
Driest weather May to October Hawaii's dry season, with early summer the driest in Honolulu
Lowest storm worry December to May Outside the June to November hurricane season (winter storms still happen)
Most time in the islands Any month, on Pride of America Hawaii only, with no sea days
Lower fares Non-holiday weeks Christmas and school breaks usually price higher, so compare live fares
Skip the flight Mid-September to mid-April That's when California round trips run

Temperature barely moves. Honolulu daytime highs run from around 80ยฐF in winter to the high 80s in late summer. That's about a nine-degree swing across the whole year.

First, which kind of Hawaii cruise are you booking?

Most “best month” articles skip this part, and it changes everything. Your calendar depends on the ship.

Option 1: Pride of America (Hawaii only, year-round)

Norwegian says Pride of America is the only U.S.-flagged cruise ship in Hawaii and sails year-round from Honolulu. The standard sailing visits four islands in seven days, with two overnights and no sea days. Departures are usually on Saturdays, with the overnights in Maui (Kahului) and Kauai (Nawiliwili). Some fall dates have shown up as longer sailings, so confirm the itinerary for your date on Norwegian's Pride of America page.

Month choice gets easy here: pick the weather you like. The catch is that you fly to Honolulu yourself. I cover the island-hopping side in my guide to a Hawaii cruise to the neighbor islands.

Option 2: Round trip from California (or one way from Vancouver)

Every other big ship is foreign-flagged. Under the Passenger Vessel Services Act (here's CBP's summary), foreign ships can't carry passengers between two U.S. ports without a foreign stop. For West Coast round trips that stop is usually Ensenada, Mexico. A few one-way repositioning sailings also link Vancouver and Honolulu.

These trips are long. The itineraries I checked in October 2026 ran 14 to 18 nights, with roughly 4 to 5 sea days each way and often just four Hawaiian ports. Princess sails them from Los Angeles and San Francisco, Holland America from San Diego, and Carnival from Long Beach.

They're also seasonal. The Ruby Princess round trips from San Francisco I found run from mid-September 2026 through April 1, 2027, then start again September 25, 2027. A Carnival Radiance sailing from Long Beach on April 11, 2027 was the latest spring date I saw. So your realistic window is mid-September to mid-April. Schedules shift, so recheck before you pay.

If you're sailing from California, my guide to Hawaii cruises from California has more ship detail. If Vancouver is closer to you, see cruising to Hawaii from Canada.

Watch out

Don't assume a “Hawaii cruise” means island time every day. On a 16-night California round trip you spend about nine or ten days crossing the Pacific, plus a day in Ensenada. That leaves a handful of days ashore in Hawaii. Count the port days before you compare fares. Since the route calls in Mexico, bring a passport. Here's a quick look at that stop: cruise to Ensenada.

Best time to cruise the Hawaiian Islands, month by month

Here's the full year at a glance. Highs are rounded long-term Honolulu averages, and sources differ by a degree or two. The cruise column shows what I found in listings as of October 2026.

Month Honolulu high What it feels like Whales Cruise picture
Jan about 80ยฐF Cooler, more showers Peak California round trips and Pride of America
Feb about 80ยฐF Breezy, some rain Peak California round trips and Pride of America
Mar about 81ยฐF Changeable, tail end of wet season Peak California round trips and Pride of America
Apr about 83ยฐF Drier, trades settle in Tapering A few early-April California sailings, plus Pride of America
May about 85ยฐF Dry season, warm Few Pride of America (no California round trips in the listings I saw)
Jun about 87ยฐF Sunny and dry Rare Pride of America
Jul about 88ยฐF Hot, steady trades Rare Pride of America
Aug about 89ยฐF Hottest stretch Rare Pride of America
Sep about 88ยฐF Hot, stickier when trades fade Rare California sailings restart mid to late Sept
Oct about 87ยฐF Warm, wet season creeping back Rare, early arrivals possible California sailings and Pride of America
Nov about 84ยฐF Rain returns Season starts Plenty of California sailings
Dec about 82ยฐF Cooler evenings, showers Building California sailings and Pride of America; holiday weeks cost more

A word on price. The “from” fares I saw in October 2026 were about $1,099 per person (double occupancy) for 16-night Ruby Princess sailings from San Francisco and about $1,189 for Emerald Princess from Los Angeles. A 14-night Carnival Radiance trip from Long Beach started around $1,139. Those are the lowest starting prices across many dates, not month averages, so check your exact sailing.

Late April to early June: the sweet spot if you're flexible

The wet season is over and the dry season is underway. Honolulu averages roughly half an inch of rain in June, against about two inches in March. Hurricane season technically starts June 1, but activity typically peaks later in the summer. The trade-off is that you'll mostly be looking at Pride of America, and the whales are mostly gone.

July and August: hot, busy, and the start of peak storm months

Great beach weather, and the trades usually keep it comfortable. But it's family vacation season, and school-break demand tends to push prices up. This is also when the central Pacific hurricane peak starts.

September to mid-November: California sailings restart

Early fall is hot and can feel sticky when the trade winds fade. It's also still hurricane season through November 30. On the plus side, this is the shoulder stretch between summer and the holidays, so deals can pop up. Check live fares and read your insurance first.

December to March: whales, showers and holiday pricing

It's still warm, just a little cooler and wetter. This is the best stretch for whales. Christmas week usually costs more, so if whales are the goal I'd pick January or February instead.

Rain, trade winds and hurricane season

Rain depends more on the side of the island than the month

Hawaii has a wetter season from roughly November to April and a drier one from May to October. But where you stand matters just as much. Hilo sits on the wet windward side of the Big Island and can get rain in any month. Leeward coasts like Kona are usually drier.

So pack a rain layer whatever the month. A lightweight packable jacket weighs almost nothing and handles a Hilo shower.

The sticky-air months

Trade winds are steadier in summer than in winter, and when they fade in early fall the afternoons feel heavier. If you hate humidity, spring is a better bet than September.

So how scary is hurricane season?

Less scary than it sounds, but not nothing. The central Pacific season runs June 1 to November 30, and activity typically peaks from July through September.

The 2026 outlook was a reminder to take it seriously. NWS Honolulu gave a 70% chance of an above-normal season, with 5 to 13 tropical cyclones, compared with the 4 or 5 of a near-normal year. The forecast leaned on El Niรฑo conditions, which tend to boost central Pacific activity. I'd check for NOAA's next outlook (this year's came out in May) before making final payment on a late-summer or fall sailing.

Winter isn't storm-free either. Hawaii took a beating from Kona Low storms in March 2026. In practice, a cruise line may swap ports or shift timing around a storm. That's a hassle, and rarely a disaster.

Melinda's tip

If you're booking July through October, read your travel insurance for named-storm and itinerary-change wording before you pay. Policies vary a lot. I'd rather you find out now than after a storm is on the map.

When can you see whales on a Hawaii cruise?

NOAA's sanctuary says humpbacks are generally seen in Hawaii from November through April, with the peak from January through March. Another NOAA page stretches the season through May and notes that a few whales turn up in other months. The sanctuary overview is worth a skim.

The numbers are big. Scientists estimate that up to 12,000 humpbacks, more than half the North Pacific population, return to Hawaiian waters each year from November through May.

Here's my honest planner take. If you sail in early November, early December or May, treat a sighting as possible, not promised. Even at the peak, a whale might give you a distant spout and nothing else. A tail slap is a bonus.

Alaska fans can look forward to humpbacks there too, in summer. My best time to cruise to Alaska guide covers that side.

Want to help the scientists? The sanctuary's Ocean Count happens on the last Saturday of January, February and March, and visitors are welcome to volunteer. It's a shore-based count, so it only works if you're on land that day.

How to save money on a Hawaii cruise

Timing helps, but the fees and the flights matter more. Here's what I can back up as of October 2026.

Timing

Fares move daily, so I won't promise a magic month. The pattern I'd trust is simple: the further a sailing sits from Christmas, school breaks and peak whale weeks, the better your odds of a lower price. Compare a few dates side by side. A week earlier or later can change the fare more than a month can.

Fees and extras to budget for

  • Taxes and port charges. Compare the total with taxes and fees included, not the headline fare.
  • Flights. A California round trip means no airfare to the ship. Pride of America means you fly to Honolulu, and Hawaii hotels and meals add up fast.
  • Hawaii's Green Fee. The law took effect January 1, 2026, and it would have added an 11% tax on the prorated cruise fare. A federal appeals court blocked that cruise portion while the lawsuit plays out, and mid-2026 reporting said it was still blocked. If the state wins, the tax could come back, so check before you book.

Melinda's tip

Price the whole trip, not just the fare. For Pride of America, add airfare and a hotel night, since the ship usually leaves Honolulu in the evening and you'll want to land the day before. For a California round trip, add parking or a ride to the port. Lines also run third and fourth guest promotions on some dates, which can change the math for a family cabin, so ask what's live.

Where to spend and where to skip

Skip the ship's beach bus when you can. A public beach and a short taxi ride often beat a package. Spend on things that need a boat or a guide, like a snorkel trip or a Na Pali boat tour. Viator is worth a look before you pay the ship's price.

For current promotions, browse my cruise deals page. For general Hawaii planning, my guide to cruising to Hawaii is a good companion.

Who should skip Hawaii (or pick a different month)

Hawaii cruises aren't for everyone. Here's when I'd steer you elsewhere.

  • You get seasick or hate sea days. The California sailings have a lot of them. Pride of America is the better fit, or skip Hawaii.
  • Your only dates are July or August and you hate heat. That's the hottest stretch. Spring is kinder.
  • You want a short, cheap cruise. Fourteen nights or more isn't short. For a quick sail from California, my Mexican Riviera cruise guide may fit better.
  • Whales are the whole reason and you can only go in September or October. Pick another month.

Your questions, answered

What is the cheapest month to cruise Hawaii?

There is no single dependable answer, because fares change daily. In the listings I checked in October 2026, 16-night California round trips started around $1,100 to $1,200 per person (double occupancy) across many fall-to-spring dates. As a rule, weeks away from Christmas and school breaks cost less, so compare live prices for your exact dates.

Is it safe to cruise Hawaii during hurricane season?

Mostly yes, but plan for it. The central Pacific season runs June 1 to November 30, with activity typically peaking from July through September. Cruise lines can change ports or timing when a storm threatens, so read your travel insurance before you pay.

When is whale season on a Hawaii cruise?

NOAA's sanctuary says humpbacks are generally in Hawaii from November through May, with the peak from January through March. A sailing in November, early December or May can still spot whales, but it's possible, not promised.

Why do Hawaii cruises from California stop in Mexico?

A federal law called the Passenger Vessel Services Act keeps foreign-flagged ships from carrying passengers between two U.S. ports, so they add a foreign stop. For California round trips that is usually Ensenada. Norwegian says Pride of America is the only U.S.-flagged cruise ship in Hawaii, which is why it can sail Hawaii only.

Can you cruise Hawaii any month of the year?

Yes, on Pride of America, which Norwegian says sails year-round from Honolulu. The long round trips from California are seasonal. The dates I found run from mid-September to early or mid-April, then pick up again in fall 2027.

Do cruise passengers pay Hawaii's new Green Fee?

As of mid-2026 reporting, no. The fee took effect January 1, 2026, but a federal appeals court blocked it for cruise ships while the lawsuit continues. That could change, so check the latest before you book.

My last word before you pick dates

For a first-timer who wants good weather and a fair price, I'd start with Pride of America in late April or May. If whales matter most, I'd look at a California sailing in January or February. If you want the most time on land, compare the port days on every itinerary before anything else.

If your dates are locked in by school or work, relax. The best time to cruise Hawaii is partly the time you can actually go, and every month has something going for it. It just feels a little different.
